Monteverdi’s “Duo Seraphim,” from the Vespers of , is in my ear because I am teaching a course about Milton’s Paradise Lost (). This very musical English Puritan — his father was a composer; he himself played the gamba and the organ, and loved to sing — is as far removed from the Italian and Catholic Monteverdi as we might. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, Italy in 1567 at a time when the spiritual values and traditions of Renaissance music were giving way to the more. In the movement “Duo Seraphim,” a veritable tour-de-force for three tenors, the top two lines are heavily and imitatively ornate, with frequent melismas, grupetti, and trilli.
